My Trip To The Rio 2016 Olympic Games

So as some of you may be aware of (or maybe not..), I recently jetted off to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2016 Olympic Games and OH MY GOD, what an incredible 16 days I had. While compiling this blog, I looked back at some of my pictures and videos and to be honest, I am in disbelief I actually done and seen what I have. Since a young age, I have always dreamt of going to see the Olympic Games. I don’t know what it is about it but I am in awe of these athletes and the whole Olympic Games World. More ambitious than ever after London 2012 (I couldn’t attend those games even though they were possibly the easiest Games to get to for me!), I began saving every penny (cent if you are going to be particular!!) I had into the RIO fund and soon, this dream was becoming somewhat of a reality. Next thing I know, it’s August 5th and I’m heading to Dublin Airport to fly to London and then Rio. This was happening. No matter what. I had a little set back 2 weeks before hand but I was not letting that get in the way. I was making a dream a reality. Something a lot of people never get the chance to do. They keep their dreams just that, dreams. Not me. I make my dreams come true. No matter what I have to do. I hope I never lose that trait. I would hate to never have goals or dreams to motivate me to succeed. Anyway, off we go on this incredible trip of a lifetime.

DAY 1 – August 6th 2016

IMG_5321So there was no relaxing for us on day 1, we were straight into our first event and that was Artistic Gymnastics – Men’s Qualification. We were staying in Santa Teresa, which is about 40/50 minutes via taxi away from Barra da Tijuca, where Parque Olimpico is situated. We got a taxi the first day as we were unsure of the metro and public transport situation and we were tired! It was 36 degrees on this day and although there was a cool breeze at times, you felt every bit of that 36 degrees. First things first, you have to take a picture with the Olympic Rings – and we done just that! This was one of the first moments where I realised ‘Oh god I am actually here’. In Parque Olimpico, there are many stadiums, 9 in fact. The venues are:

  • Carioca Arena 1
  • Carioca Arena 2
  • Carioca Arena 3
  • Future Arena
  • Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre
  • Olympic Aquatics Stadium
  • Olympic Tennis Centre
  • Rio Olympic Arena
  • Rio Olympic Velodrome

We headed to the Rio Olympic area for the Gymnastic event and wow! It was insane to see something I am so used to watching on TV in real life with my own eyes.

IMG_5326

I got to see my favourite Male Gymnasts: Louis Smith, Nile Wilson, Max Whitlock and Kristian Thomas. Basically all of Team GB.

Unfortunately, we did witness that horrible injury to French gymnast Samir Ait Said, when he ended his vault dismount wrong. Let’s just say it wasn’t a pretty sight and the whole arena was silent. But Team GB were incredible and Nile Wilson’s High Bar (or Horizontal bar) routine was spectacular and it is no surprise he won a Bronze medal in the individual.

DAY 2 – August 7th 2016.

We got our chill day this day. We had no ticket to any games (although I would have loved to have gotten tickets to some particular events but they were ‘sold out’… Mmm I wonder!)

We went to Barra Shopping and oh my, that puts our shopping centres to shame! Over 600 shops! We wandered around and even seen a few athletes spending time with their loved ones and family. Starbucks became my local haunt as it was the only place with decent wifi and it seems the athletes felt the same as I would run into some of them there. This particular day, I saw an Australian athlete, Brock Motum and embarrassingly, I didn’t know it was him until after.
We passed a lot of beautiful local boutiques and one that caught my eye was ‘Oh, Boy!’. The reason being because of this fabulous jumpsuit they had in the window, it had me written all over it. But I sadly left it behind, as I haven’t been feeling overly body confident lately and knew it would just sit and collect dust on my never ending clothes rail at home.

DAY 3 – August 8th 2016

We went to Boulevard Olympico on this day. It is located at the docklands, has many stages, venues of some of the main sponsors of the Olympic Games, several high definition screens to watch Olympic Games and it is home to the Olympic Flame. When we went there, it also had a massive cruise ship docked and we later found out, it was where the NBA + Olympic Basketball players were staying!! There was some incredible street art along the streets as we walked down.

Anyway, earlier that morning, I saw Cody Simpson tweet saying he was playing a gig somewhere in Rio that afternoon and it was free. But I had no idea of where anywhere was in Rio so I lost all hope in seeing him. Well you could’ve just imagine my excitement when we arrived at the Boulevard Olimpico to see the exact venue Cody said he was playing at on the strip. I almost, just almost, screamed.

IMG_5518
We headed in the direction of the Coca-Cola Experience, where the gig was. I knew I was in the right area quickly when I saw a few young girls around the place. I need to learn I am soon 23 years old and my fangirl days should be over. But my little heart was so excited and I made sure I was front row!
Before I get into to gig, the Coca-Cola Experience was insane! We got free limited edition Coca-Cola (the bar man was very friendly and asked us where we were from and when we mentioned Ireland, he started singing ‘Brady is on fire..’ and was delighted to have met some Irish people!) You could get pictures with the Olympic Torch also but of course I had only time for one thing!
While waiting for Cody, we got to watch the Australia Vs Serbia Men’s Basketball match and that was probably the reason as to why Cody was late on stage! He sang about 4 songs, short but sweet.

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

As I was at the front, I could see Ali Simpson and Jake Boys as they were sitting in front of me. I only got a picture with Ali, who is incredibly pretty and super sweet!

IMG_5563

But wait for it, the best part was yet to come. Cody Simpson and Coca-Cola gave everyone in the front row FREE tickets to the Women’s Handball games that night. How cool is that? For the rest of my life I can say ‘Cody Simpson gave me free tickets to an Olympic event?’

IMG_5569

The two handball games we went to were cracking games! We saw the Netherlands Vs Argentina and Angola Vs Montenegro. We also got home very late that night.  It was after 3am!

DAY 4 – August 9th 2016

We decided to go to Boulevard Olympico again as we didn’t see it all. We found the Olympic flame at last. We didn’t do much else that day as we were exhausted from the day before. We sat and had ice cream and watched the Brazil Vs Spain Men’s Basketball game.

IMG_5587

DAY 5 – August 10th 2016

This was one of the days I had been waiting for. It was the Men’s 3M Springboard Synchro Final = Jack Laugher and Chris Mears competing. The weather turned to a typical Irish Summer’s day, non stop rain all day! Jack and Chris were in top form in their performances and were leading the whole way, but that didn’t stop us being anxious when it came to the China duo in their final dive as they were close behind the Team GB lads. I was so proud and happy when we found out they won Gold, they honestly deserved it so much. Where I was sitting was very close to the medal ceremony and I made sure I was going to be at the barrier to seem them walking out! I was surrounded by an abundance of Great Britain fans and I did not hide the fact that I was indeed Irish but a massive fan of the GB duo! I went home a very happy girl that evening!

IMG_5662b

DAY 6 – August 11th 2016

We decided to take another chill day on this day. We opted to go see the Sugar Loaf Mountain! We got the metro to Botafogo and headed to the shopping centre. In this shopping centre, you can go to the rooftop and you can get an incredible view of the Sugar Loaf. We didn’t get to go up the mountain but I don’t think Mam would of done it anyway! We spent day relaxing in the shopping centre and had one of the most incredible Pizza’s I have ever had in the food court!

IMG_5682

DAY 7 – August 12th 2016

It was time to go to the Basketball arena on this day and I think Mam was most excited about this event. With both of us having a basketball background, we couldn’t wait for this! The teams playing were Australia Vs China, meaning I got to see my Starbucks friend Brock play (I was super excited every time he scored!)

IMG_5691

DAY 8 – August 12th 2016

Because the weather had been a bit overcast, it meant that we had to wait until a very sunny day to see the Christ The Redeemer and this day was the perfect day. The views from the top were incredible. We spent an hour at the top just taking in the wonderful views. Once up there, you can understand why it is one of the 7 wonders of the world. On a clear day, the statue is visible from anywhere in Rio. We got a lovely taxi driver who brought us to a place near to the Christ to get another view of the Sugar Loaf and he even took the last picture for me, to have he Sugar Loaf in my hand!

DAY 9 – August 14th 2016

From a young age, I have always wanted to go and see I was on Copacabana Beach and I have done that. I did however pick a wrong day to go as it was so over packed for two reasons: It was a Sunday and Brazilian Ladies were in the Beach Volleyball final. So I saw very little beach but I was still there. I didn’t go sunbathing or swimming but Mam and I had a few drinks in one of the beach huts and also had delicious food. We also got to watch the Men’s Gymnastic Individual finals – I saw Max win his Gold on Copacabana beach, where did you see it?

IMG_5794

DAY 10 – August 15th 2016

At last, I was going to see some of Team Ireland in action and it was off to the Boxing Arena! We went to Katie Taylor’s fight and it seemed like it was all Irish that was in there! Sadly, Katie lost but it was so cool to see her fight. After the fight, I saw Paddy Byrnes and Gary O’Donovan but I didn’t want to go over to them as I didn’t want to interrupt them.

IMG_5813b

IMG_5817b

DAY 11 – August 16th 2016

This is without a doubt my favourite day (well apart from the 5am start!). We were up early to go to the Olympic Stadium for some Athletics. We got there at 9am and at 9:30am, all the games kicked off. I always struggle to keep up with events at Athletics as there could be up to 4 sports on any one time! When I bought the tickets, I had no clue what events I would see or who I see, so I was over the moon when I found out the one and only Usain Bolt was going to be running in his semi – final heat. Seeing him run with my own eyes is something I shall never forget. The place was going insane for him. Although, my spirits were damped when Dad informed me Michael Conlon was robbed in his fight as I had planned to go see him in the next round.

IMG_5834

IMG_5867b

IMG_5870b

IMG_5889

After all the events were over in the Olympic Stadium, we headed back to Barra for the Men’s 3m Springboard Diving Final. As wifi is pretty hard to find in Rio and I was nowhere near a Starbucks while in transit to Barra, thankfully, my Dad informed me (once again!) that Irish Diver, Oliver Dingley had made it through the semi finals and was competing that night so I was proud as punch entering the arena with my Irish Flag! Also, Team GB favourite Jack Laugher had qualified also so it was an evening well spent.

IMG_5893

Just before the Diving started, Oliver’s Dad popped down to say hello to us and sure we were only delighted!

IMG_5899

IMG_5916b

IMG_5978b

IMG_6100

Jack Laugher was unfortunate not to get a Gold again but he did get Silver, so not a bad evening of Diving for him. But the most important part of the night had to be Oliver. Oliver produced some incredible dives and resulted in him reaching a Personal Best and a spot on the World Series next year. Oh and did I mention he is 8th in the World right now? Incredible! We were chatting to his parents after the event finished and then the man of the moment popped up to see his parents and well, he was ever so lovely to have stayed to take pictures and talk to Mam and I for a while. Without a doubt, my favourite moment of the Olympics was talking to Oliver!
IMG_6109

IMG_6110

Before meeting Oliver, I managed to to bag myself selfies with Tom Daley and Chris Mears.

DAY 12 – August 17th 2016

We decided to stay closer to where we were staying as I wasn’t feeling great. As I mentioned earlier, we were staying in Santa Teresa, probably the most popular place in Rio with tourists. We went to see the famous ‘Escadaria Selarón’. This was another one of those surreal moments as I have seen pictures of these steps on Pinterest and Tumblr for years and thought I could only dream of maybe getting the chance to sit and take a picture on them.

IMG_6116

DAY 13 – August 18 2016

It was another early start and it was back to Olympic Stadium for more Athletics as Irishman Thomas Barr was in the 400m Hurdles race. He was so close to a Bronze medal!!! He did break a National Record. There was some incredible games on also that day, including Shot Put, Relay and various other hurdle races.

IMG_6126

DAY 14

Another chill day again and back to Barra Shopping, nothing else exciting happened!

DAY 15 – August 20th 2016

The last day of events for me. It was time for the Men’s 10m Platform Diving Final and I was so looking forward to seeing Tom Daley. He had placed first in the prelims and I was sure he’d cruise through the semi’s into the final… I only found out as I took my seat in the Aquatics arena that he failed to get to the final and I almost cried. I was offered tickets for the Semi’s but refused as I was convinced I’d see him in the final. Minus Tom, it was still an incredible final, a few shocks and it was very close. Qui Bo, who is Tom’s biggest competitor and favourite to win Gold, placed 8th!!!!! He even got 4’s on one dive and you could hear the gasps around the venue.

Before the event, I said for one last time, I would get a picture with the Olympic Rings! This was quite hilarious as Mam was not centering her shot and I was not amused but we eventually got a decent enough photo!

IMG_6170

Before I left for Rio, I was warned by none other than Celia to mind out for the Brazilian guys as they would be mad after me with my blonde hair and pale, porcelain skin. I may have laughed at her at the time but it was very true that day! I decided to wear a bit of red lipstick and my goodness, I had a few guys telling me how beautiful I am. I was taken back by it. It made me feel good about myself again!

DAY 16 – August 21st 2016.

IMG_6217

Flying over Rio

And that was it. My time at Rio 2016 was over and we were heading to the airport. While in duty free, a beautiful Egyptian athlete asked me if I needed help (I was waiting for Mam) and then he passed me again and said ‘You are very beautiful, may I?’ and gave me a kiss on my forehead. I was so embarrassed but he made my day! We flew with British Airways, so that meant some Team GB members were going to be on our flight but no one I knew. The main thing about my flight was someone else who was on it. Usain Bolt. USAIN BOLT WAS ON MY FLIGHT AND I DID NOT KNOW. I was talking to the pilot after the flight and he asked me did I get his joke he said on the intercom (He said we got into Heathrow 15 minutes earlier because we had some special guests and when we landed he said ‘The last 100m are always the longest..’ I knew it was an Athletics person but NEVER thought of Usain!!) and when the pilot told me Bolt was in the flight, I could have cried!! Ah well.

I will never ever forget this trip. I still can’t believe I have been there and seen everything I have. I am so blessed to have such supportive parents, they helped make it a reality.

Now, time to start saving for Tokyo 2020.. I have the Olympic bug now! It is Gold Coast 2018 first. What a way to see the world eh?

Hope you enjoyed this blog! I did also vlog the trip and those videos should be up very soon!

Thank you for reading xo

Nathan Carter – Live at the Marquee

Without a doubt, he is the biggest name in Country and Irish music currently. He has even made Country music popular again. Yes, I am talking about the Country heartthrob Nathan Carter. I put on my best dancing shoes and grabbed a few members of the family and headed down south to the Marquee in Cork to see what he was all about!

IMG_4976

I’ll admit it – I have only recently fallen under Nathan’s spell and now, I have been asking myself what has been wrong with me all this time?

I have always grown up loving Country music although I have been embarrassed to admit it until now, NOW I DON’T CARE. In fact I’m proud of it, that I have a wide range of musical tastes!

The Marquee in Cork is one of my favourite concert spots so I knew I was in for a good night. It was full to the brim with a sold out crowd of 5,000 people!

The main man himself can on stage a little before 9pm and Jesus, he put on quite a show. He first came out dressed very smartly in a 3 piece suit and oh my, he had me very flustered 😛

He sang covers, such as ‘Good Time Girls’, ‘Caledonia’ and ‘Two Doors Down’ and new material like ‘Temple Bar’ & ‘Skinny Dippin’ and sure the place was only bopping!

He even had a costume change and stripped out of the suit into something more casual!

Nathan showed off his musical talents, when he sang a couple of his songs while playing the piano.

Many often question his success and mock him for only being famous because of his good looks but Carter is incredibly talented and although he sings mostly cover songs, he sings them pretty damn well!!

Nathan Carter made playing an accordion a very sexy thing and I never knew that a handsome man playing an accordion is a turn on for me…

IMG_5089

For €35, I got what I paid for and much more. Nathan is the second ever artist I’ve seen live to break stage curfew – he played for a little over 2 hours!

So now, I’ve lost my Nathan Carter concert virginity and you know what? I’m glad I did 😉

Sounds Live Feels Live Tour in Dublin

PicMonkey Collage

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

It has been two weeks since Australian pop punk band 5 Seconds of Summer rocked up to Dublin to perform 2 sold out nights in Dublin’s 3Arena and they put on a seriously good show!

Okay so I unashamedly will admit this: I WENT BOTH NIGHTS. I know, such a fangirl. It gets worse. It was my 12th and 13th time to see them live since 2013. I just can’t help it, they are my thing, I just need to seem them live, like all the time! I even considered just going on the whole UK & Ireland leg of the tour but you know, I ain’t rich so that plan was put to bed. I usually go to London for 1 date but due to SO MUCH university work this year, I had to call a rain check on that and it broke my heart because it meant I wouldn’t see my fave 5SOS friend Giana. It’s all good though, we have plans for next tour already 😉

IMG_3569nm

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

In case you are completely clueless as to who the hell I am talking about, I’ll help you out there! I wrote a blog about them a few years ago now actually, so you can check that out here to bring you up to speed!

Their second album, Sounds Good, Feels Good was released on October 23 worldwide and went to Number 1 on the charts worldwide, including Ireland! In just one year since their self titled album ‘5 Seconds Of Summer’, they have matured their sound and produced some amazing songs on this album. A key thing to take note is that the guys actually wrote all their own material for the album and some of the lyrics came from personal experiences. I am still  trying to decide my favourite song, get back to me on that 😉

One of my favourite parts of a 5SOS show is the queue because that is when we drink and catch up ( we typically queue for like 10 hours!!!). This time was a little different as I went with my friend Lisa (both nights!). But somethings never change and we did drink, causing us to get some strange looks from the young ones around us! We did make some friends in the queue both nights also! Still, I missed Gi!

On Tuesday night, we were on Mikey’s side and in typical Sarah Jane style, we were very close to barrier. I mean, we were 3 rows away. So close that the feedback from the speakers ruined my videos, but I didn’t care. I was happy out being on this angel’s side all night!

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

On Wednesday night, we were on Calum’s side and Lisa was only delighted! And again we were 3 rows away from barrier. So I am your girl if you need to be close to stage okay?! Well it actually only happens at a 5SOS show but still *hair flick*

abc

The set list for both nights was as follows:

  • Carry On
  • Hey Everybody!
  • Money
  • Voodoo Doll
  • Don’t Stop
  • Outer Space
  • Waste the Night
  • Castaway
  • Jet Black Heart
  • Amnesia
  • Beside You
  • Vapour
  • Catch Fire
  • Disconnected
  • End Up Here
  • Good Girls
  • Permanent Vacation
  • What I Like About You
  • She’s Kinda Hot
  • She Looks So Perfect

On Tuesday night, they did do a short cover of The Script’s The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.

Image belongs to me, Sarah Jane Allen

I vlogged both days and shows and you can check them out below.

Stupidly enough, we decided not to go out after Tuesday’s night show, even though we had planned to head to Dublin’s finest nightclub, Copper Face Jacks, but when it came to it, we decided to get pizza. I got a text at around 3am asking if I went out because a certain band WENT TO COPPERS!!! Ugh!
This is where my Mam would say ‘It wasn’t meant to be, don’t worry, there is always next time!’, even though that is the second time it has happened!!!

aa

Anyway, the guys took a well deserved two weeks off and our now about to embark on the European leg of the Sounds Live, Feels Live tour.

If you are lucky enough to be going to see them somewhere around Europe, you are in for one hell of a show 😉

Don’t worry, there are some tickets still available and you can check here for more details.

Who to watch in 2015 – Music!

2014 was an extraordinary year for music and 2015 promises to be the same, if not better! With more newcomers set to take over, old names are guarenteed to make a comeback, it’s an exciting time to be a music fan.

The Newcomers

Years & Years

Years & Years are an electronica trio from London. The group formed back in 2010 and released their debut single ‘I Wish I Knew’ in 2012. But it was their single ‘Desire’, released in November 2014, that made their name known. They’ve toured with Sam Smith in Europe in 2014 and gained a large following. They have huge critical hype around them as they have been nominated for the Brits Critics’ Choice Award and MTV Brand New. P.s. The lead singer is Olly Alexander is very easy on the eyes 😉

Prides

Prides are a synthpop band from Glasgow and started in 2013. They released their debut EP in February 2014 called ‘The Seeds You Sow’. In less than a year, they have stacked up over 900,000 views on Youtube. They performed their song ‘Messiah’ at the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony in Glasgow last year, allowing them to spread their name to an even bigger audience.

Becky G

Becky G is an American singer/rapper from California. She began to form a fanbase back in 2011 when she posted videos on Youtube. In 2012, she featured on Cody Simpson’s ‘Wish U Were Here’ and also collaborated with Cher Lloyd on her single ‘Oath’. Becky is set to be 2015 biggest urban pop star. In April 2014, she released her first single from her debut album, ‘Shower’  and charted at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. In December, she released her latest single ‘Can’t Stop Dancin’ in December and it’s a tune that would have you dancing!!

Nick Gardner

Nick Gardner has an electronic/pop sound and started on Youtube in 2008 and has racked up over 5 million views. He has done endless amount of covers, from Bruno Mars to Adele to Labrinth. He has recorded his debut album with Universal Music and toured with Maroon 5 in 2014. Nick’s debut single is ‘Lose You’.

Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes is a Canadian musician. He found fame when he started posting covers on Vine in 2013. He signed to Island Records and released his debut single ‘Life of the Party’ in June 2014. He won a Teen Choice Award for Webstar in Music in 2014. He has featured on UK band, The Vamps, single ‘Oh Cecilia’ in 2014. Oh yeah and he is just 15 years old. His recent single is ‘Something Big’ and I am pretty sure, he is going to be the next big thing from Canada.

Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony is an American girl band that were formed on US X Factor (I’ve wrote a blog previously about them, check it out!). Their career has been growing throughout 2014 and were meant to released their debut album ‘Reflection’ in November of 2014 but pushed it back to January 2015. They won MTV’s Video Music Award for Artist to Watch for Miss Movin’ On in 2014. This album release will probably be the best thing about January.

Rixton

Rixton are a Pop/R&B band from England and have Scooter Braun as their manager. The topped the charts in 2014 with their catchy debut single ‘Me & My Broken Heart’, successfully getting their first number one at the same time.  Their second single, ‘Wait On Me’, was dropped in November 2014 and once again, they produced an unforgettable tune that is sure to have you singing along when it comes on the radio. They have been working extremely hard on their debut album and it’s sure to be a hit worldwide.

The Comebacks

Adele

It’s been 4 years since we’ve heard from her and she is rumoured to drop ’25’ this year. Without a doubt, this is the most highly anticipated album for 2015. She has wrote with Diane Warren among some other famous names. No matter who she writes with, it is no doubt this album will be a huge success.

Image belongs to www.vogue.com

Ellie Goulding

It has been 2 years since Ellie released Halcyon, She later re-released it and named it Halcyon Days. In October 2014, she featured on Calvin Harris’s new song ‘Outside’. She confirmed in November that she has been working on her third album and that it will be released in 2015.

Rihanna

Since 2006, Rihanna released an album every year up until 2012. She hasn’t gone off the radar altogether, as in 2013, she appeared on Eminem’s song ‘The Monster’ and in 2014, she featured on Shakira’s single ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You’. R8 is almost ready though, after she recently teased a new song on her Instagram. It is rumoured that Drake and ex-man Chris Brown are to feature on the album.

Kanye West

Yeezus came out in 2013 and Kanye has been touring with that album since. Rumour of a new album stemmed from Rihanna’s Diamond Ball, when tickets for his 2015 tour were put up for auction. He has been in the studio for months and even missed Thanksgiving with his new wife Kim and daughter North to work in the studio. He had stated that he doesn’t ‘want it to a be like a regular Kanye album’. At midnight on New Years Eve, he dropped his new single ‘Only One’ who he collaborated with Paul McCartney.

Demi Lovato

Demi released her self titled album ‘Demi’ back in 2013 and she spent most of 2014 touring around the world. She has confirmed that she has been writing and recording new music and her team said it is due to come out sometime this year.

Lawson

It’s been two years since they released their debut album ‘Chapman Square’ and almost 2 years since they have released their singles ‘Brokenhearted’ and ‘Juliet’. Andy, Joel, Ryan and Adam have spent pretty much the last two years working hard in recording studios in various studios in America and Europe. With ‘Chapman Square’ producing some incredible songs, I’m confident that album number two will be just as good, if not better.

There are many more albums set to drop in 2015 from various artists like Justin Bieber, Rita Ora, Usher, Labrinth, Little Mix, Nick Jonas and Miley Cyrus.

My Highlights of 2014!

2014 has been one rollercoaster ride! It’s been a bit of a crappy year for me and my family to say the least but throughout the sadness and bad news, I have had some of the best times of my life this year! Below I want to share some of my favourite highlights of 2014 (in no particular order!)

Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The Commonwealth Games took place in August in Glasgow. It has been on my bucket list for years to attend them and when the opportunity arose that I could go, I grabbed it with both hands (and grabbed my mother too!) and headed to Scotland.

IMG_8844

My passport and plane ticket to Glasgow. Image belongs to me.

One of the main reasons I wanted to go was to see Tom Daley dive. Tom was diving in the Men’s Individual 10m Platform Diving competition on the 2nd of August and up until 9am that morning I hadn’t got a ticket, I was devastated, even though I did see him on the Thursday night when I went to see Jack Laugher dive in the 3m Men’s Springboard competition,  I wanted to see him dive. But luck was on my side and at 9:58am on the 2nd of August, I got the last ticket to see Tom Daley dive that evening in the Final and I saw him win Gold. I shook with happiness when I got the ticket!

As I mentioned earlier on, I got to see one of my other favourite divers, Jack Laugher dive in the Men’s 3M Springboard Final on Thursday 31st of August and I witnessed him win Silver.  Luck was on my side again, as when I was at the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, I got to met him. He ran over to me after I called his name so many times like I was Rose calling Jack in the titanic! I was extremley happy. My trip to Glasgow was a very successful one. A few more things off the bucket list 😉

Paris

One of my best friends lives in Lyon, France and she turned 21 this year and I wanted to surprise her with an unforgettable birthday present. So I secretly flew over to Lyon, even though she found out on that day I was arriving, and surprised her. But what she didn’t know was that I had got two standing tickets to see One Direction in Stade de France in Paris on the following Friday! So on the 19th of June, we carpooled to Paris, one of the longest but most beautiful and exciting road trips ever, and at midnight we arrived in Paris! We got up early the next morning and done a bit of site seeing before the concert! We saw the Arc de Triomphe and had breakfast in a cute cafe on the Champs Elysees.

Melo and me at the Arc de Troimphe.

After that, we took the Metro and went to the Eiffel Tower! It was such a beautiful day and the view was beautiful. Melo and I have this thing were we like to take cool photos in iconic places and what better place to do this than the Eiffel Tower!

5 Seconds of Summer in London

On March 3rd, I got to see 5 Seconds of Summer in Shepherd’s Bush in London with my 5SOS buddy Giana and some other girls I became friends with through the boys!

WIth Giana, Deanna and Zoe at Sheperd's Bush.

WIth Giana, Deanna and Zoe at Sheperd’s Bush.

We queued from 9am that morning, it rained and was so cold. The things we do for those 4 Aussie babes!! The venue is a intimate venue with a capacity of 2,000 people. We were standing, hence why we were queuing so early. We ended up being front row and that was an amazing experience. Every time I see 5 Seconds of Summer live, they just get better and better. I’ve been to over 60 plus concerts and this was up there in my top ten concerts. It was one of those concerts where you just got lost in the moment, in the music. Being there with friends I had made through the boys was even better. Giana and I have this tradition and it’s #GettingDrunkAt5SOS and we have so much fun playing games in the queue! I find it amazing how some of my good friendships are formed because of bands! Looking forward to seeing Giana in London at 5SOS next June 😉

Turning 21

On the 3rd of November, I turned 21. 21 years old. What a milestone to hit. I had my dream 21st Birthday party on the 31st of October, in Great Gatsby style! It was one of the best nights of my life and I got to celebrate it with all my closest friends and family. I will never forget that night (even though I did drink a lot!) because I finally felt happy, within myself and in my life. At one part of the night, I stood alone with the bottle of champagne the pub gave me for my birthday on the dance floor and looked around and just smiled. I had never been more happier in my life.

Meeting Shane O’Donnell

In 2013, Davy Fitz asked a certain 19 year old man to play in the All Ireland Hurling Final Replay and wanted him to do one thing and one thing only – score goals! That man certain done that! Shane O’Donnell scored 3-3 in the replay and Clare won the All Ireland! Shane O’Donnell became the Niall Horan of GAA that day! He became my favourite hurler that day too, purely because of his hurling skills.. Nothing to do with his looks at all! 😛

3rd night of Where We Are Tour in Croke Park

I was privileged enough to go see One Direction on their Where We Are Tour in Croke Park 3 times. On the Sunday, I got a standing ticket and went with my friends Flozey and Susan (plus her sister Janet!). The two previous nights were incredible but the 3rd and final night was something special. I don’t exactly know why it was more special than the other two, but it was the best show of the weekend. I got some incredible photos of the boys and Harry even waved at me (The video is on my Instagram!).

How big 5 Seconds Of Summer Became

2014 was the year of 5 Seconds of Summer. They were the breakthrough artist of the year and took the world by storm. With two number one singles, with ‘She Looks So Perfect’ and ‘Don’t Stop’ in the UK and USA, and their debut album reaching number one in the USA. The boys seem to be a huge success in Ireland also, with both ‘She Looks So Prefect’ and ‘Don’t Stop’ reaching number one here and ‘Amnesia’ and ‘Good Girls’ both charting in the top 20 singles and the album also debuting at number one. I’m incredibly proud of these boys and look forward to what 2015 has in store for them.

Being front row at Cody Simpson and having Jackson Harris sing to me

On July 4th, I saw Cody Simpson in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. Thanks to my friends Sophie and Jade, I had a front row ticket to the show. For his support act, he had Jackson Harris, an American singer. One thing I certainly haven’t forgotten is Jackson singing to me. I barely knew of him before the show but by the end of his set, he truly won me over. When Jackson was singing his song Right Kind of Wrong, he spotted me singing along to the chorus and of course I got all shy and embarrassed, which made him come over to right in front of me, he knelt down, held eye contact with me and smiled while sang to me and even held my hand. I got so hot and bothered that my friends Jade and Sophie had to fan me down when he stopped singing to me. My favourite thing about Cody’s concert (apart from Jackson singing to me!) was that it was an acoustic concert.  I wrote a blog about the concert so check that out!

Seeing Demi Lovato live in concert (FINALLY!)

For my 21st Birthday my best friend Sarah Coghlan ( she has an INCREDIBLE blog too, check it out!!) surprised me with a ticket to Enrique Iglesias’s concert in the 3 Arena on the 23rd of November. More importantly, Demi Lovato was Enrique’s support act. When I opened my card from her and saw the ticket, I was next to tears. I was shaking. She was making one of my ultimate dreams come. To this day, I still can’t thank her enough. When Demi came on stage that night, my heart stopped. I shooking and cried from the minute she came on stage. Demi has been a huge idol to me since 2010 or thereabouts. When she sang Skyscraper and Nightingale, I cried the whole way through both songs. I looked like such an idiot but I didn’t care. Nobody, not even Sarah (although she knows how much I adore Demi) knew how much that moment meant to me. I was so extremely happy. Nothing. I mean NOTHING, could of ruined that moment. I was with one of my best friends, who bought me that ticket, seeing my ultimate idol live. I still can’t believe it. Hearing my favourite song Neon Lights live was incredible. I never felt more alive than I did at that moment.

Meeting 4/5 of the Janoskians after sneaking into the Four Season’s Hotel

Jade and I snuck into the Four Season’s Hotel. Like I don’t know how we done it but we did. Thank god we did. We met Skip in a bathroom towel (love heart eyes emoji) and spoke to Jai properly and got him to follow me on Twitter. But we did get kicked out after that. We still managed to meet James and Luke outside. My favourite was finally meeting Luke, god I love him! He gave me a kiss on the cheek! Beau wouldn’t come out to meet us though 😦

The bathrooms inn the Four Seasons are so fancy, I had to take a selfie.

Elizabeth’s Sweet 16th

My darling Elizabeth turned 16 this year. Words don’t explain how much I love that girl. I can’t believe she is 16. I can’t imagine my life without her. She is such a beautiful, kind hearted, loving, special lady and I’m so proud to be her cousin. She makes be a better person, she makes me smile when I’m down and she gives me strength when I am weak. She is such a strong girl for everything she goes through and she never complains and is always with a smile! She has taught me to treasure the little things in life.

My Dad getting elected for the Central Council Delegate for Laois GAA County Board

On the 8th of December, my Dad got elected to be Central Council Delegate for Laois GAA and I couldn’t of been any prouder of him. My Dad had a very bad year in 2014 and this was the lift he needed. The spark that had been missing came back into my Dad. Once again he was the underdog and once again shocked everyone and beat off all competition. I don’t say it to him very often, but I am very proud of my Dad and all he has achieved. He works so hard and does so much for Laois GAA and it’s nice to see that people appreciate my father. So Dad, if Mam has told you about this or is showing you this, I told you you could do it. Once you believe in yourself, you can do anything. You know what you are talking about when it comes to GAA and you are the man for any GAA job in my eyes. Words don’t even describe how proud I am of you. I love you Daddy.

X Factor in November

As part of my 21st Birthday present, I got to go to Wembley to see the X Factor Studios and my favourite contestants. It is something I will never forget! I wrote a blog about it, if you want the full story! I got to meet Only The Young and 7/8 of Stereo Kicks. I also made a new friendship with Tania who has been incredible to me since.

Becoming even closer to Sarah, Aislin and Joe

Sarah, Joe and Aislin. I’d be lost without them. It is as simple as that. I love the 3 of them so much it hurts. They mean the world to me. 2014 has given me so many good memories with this trio. I could talk all day about them. But they know why they made my 2014. I Love you guys.

My weekend at One Direction’s Where We Are Tour in Croke Park!

So one of the most highly anticipated weekends of the year for an Irish fangirl has been and gone and what a weekend it was! The biggest selling band in the world, One Direction, launched their biggest tour to date, the Where We Are Tour, with three sold out nights in Dublin’s Croker with the general capacity of 82,000 people, meaning over 240,000 people watching on over the three nights! I was one of the lucky few people that managed to go all 3 nights to Croke Park and I am so glad I did! Each night got better and better and for me personally, Sunday’s show was without a doubt the best night of the weekend! I managed to Live While I’m Young, I came away with some incredible Midnight Memories, I danced all night to some of The Best Song(s) Ever, I Happily enjoyed the Little Things One Direction joked about on stage all weekend and found out how Strong I am after surviving standing on Sunday by not getting killed by the younger, crazier fangirls! (Did you see what I done there  with the songs? I am a genius aren’t I?! Okay, Okay I know it was cringey but just giggle anyway!) One Direction performed a set list of 23 songs each night to the thousands of adoring fans who, despite the lashing rain, enjoyed every minute the 5 young lads were on stage.

Croke Park was a huge gig for Mullingar native, Niall Horan as 4 years ago, he auditioned for X Factor in Croke Park and hoped his dreams would all work out for him.

From almost not making it through X Factor to selling out his home stadium 4 years later!

During Friday night’s show, Niall took a selfie with the 83,000 fans and posted it to Twitter a few hours later, showing his appreciation, still in disbelief that he was playing Ireland’s biggest stage!

Although the boys said it was Niall’s weekend, Croke Park was also a special moment for Harry, Liam, Louis and Zayn as it was and will be the biggest crowd the band have ever performed for. With this being a stadium tour, it meant a bigger stage and bigger production and the lads didn’t disappoint! The stage took up all of the Hill 16 and had a catwalk going down to the halfway point of the pitch. There was no shortage of pyrotechnics, with fireworks going off the minute the boy band phenomenon popped up on stage singing Midnight Memories. The stage itself had laser beam lights along the catwalk and projected laser into the stadium also. With many critics and non fans claiming One Direction to be a stereotypical boyband, they really aren’t! The entire show was chilled backed and not over rehearsed. The lads literally just messed around as if the were in a park on their own and not in front 82,000 plus people. They don’t need the choreographed dance moves or the ‘key changing stepping up from the stools’ like what Westlife done because that isn’t who One Direction are. Their fans know that One Direction can’t dance (well Liam can certainly move and Harry likes to think he can) so why would they make a fool of themselves learning ridiculous dance routines! Over all 3 nights, Niall and the lads mentioned how Irish fans ‘are the best fans in the world’ and with that, it must make me an unreal fan seeing as I went three times! 😛 (Okay, I like to think I am!)

The stage!

The stage!

Liam and Harry were full of life on stage over the weekend and taking the Irish culture to heart. Liam declared his love for Superquinn sausages on Friday night and Harry begged the crowd to scream ‘2 bananas for a euro‘ on Saturday night. Harry also won the crowd over with his Irish accent, talking Irish and simply saying ‘What’s the craic Dublin?’ The lads showed they were having the craic by wowing the crowd with their Macarena skills, singing the Friends theme tune and explaining what flavour of crisps each member of the band was!

One Direction asked pals 5 Seconds of Summer (who are my faves, if you didn’t already know!) to be their opening act on this tour and let’s just say if Croke Park had a roof, 5SOS would have blown it off, that’s how good they were!  They sang 11 songs including She Looks So Perfect, Don’t Stop, Disconnected and a cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream (which might I add is better than the original!).

With Croker being such a success, I have no doubt that One Direction will be back their soon and I am already looking forward to it. Gwaaaan Nialler, proud of ya buddy 😉

Now, as my acing body is still recovering from all the dancing and standing and as my post concert depression kicks in, I pack away all the One Direction merchandise and Irish flags. It was a good weekend lads, see ye next time! 😉

Miley Cyrus’s Bangerz Tour Hit Dublin

Whether you love her or hate her, you can’t ignore her. She’s one of the most talked about pop stars of 2014 and she certainly knows exactly what she has to do to grab your attention!

Last night, 20th of May, I headed along to see Miley Cyrus as she was set to take the stage of Dublin’s O2 Arena. I knew right well what I was going to witness on stage and was fully prepared for the ‘twerking’ and the ‘tongue action’ and skimpy outfits. Miley is a performer and she done exactly that. People are often to quick to judge people in the music industry. Nowadays, musicians have to carry out controversial performances and do outrageous things to stay in the limelight. Everyone seems to forget Miley is just 21 years old and she is doing exactly what most young girls do, having fun and living her life. If you went to any college throughout Ireland on a night out, you’d seen many girls do the same things, if not worse! Downside is, everything in Miley’s life is under scrutiny by the public and media.  There were one or two times on stage last night that I saw that a young girl having fun.

Miley kicked off the show with a huge picture of herself on the screen and a slide in the shape of a tongue emerged from the screen and Miley made her extravagant entrance.

She performed a mixture of songs, 14 of which are from her BANGERZ album, an acoustic set which included covers of Summertime Sadness, Jolene and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out but only opted to perform 2 of her old songs, Can’t Be Tamed and Party In The USA.

Miley Setlist

Miley changed outfits at 7 times and all bar one were based around leotards. While the media slate Miley for not having respect for herself with her revealing clothes, if you actually looked closely to the star’s outfits last night, you could visibly see Miley was wearing a skin tone body suit to respect her modesty. Below are some of the pictures I took last night.

Miley felt so comfortable on stage last night and it beamed throughout the show. She certainly didn’t come across fake or over-rehearsed. She interacted with fans and it was so natural. Just before she sang her hit ‘Wrecking Ball‘, the 21 year old paused, when she was told not to talk but couldn’t help herself and commented on how the Irish started a chant while she was getting dressed under the stage and made the crowd re do the ‘Woo Woo Woooo’ chant and danced away to herself. She even said that ‘That Sh*t is for sure gonna be on my next album you motherf*ckers!!’

The media and public need to start paying more attention to Miley’s voice as she is so talented vocally. This was highlighted especially when she done her acoustic set during the middle of the show. Below are some of the videos I took last night during the show. (I will add more once they’ve uploaded to Youtube, joys of living in the countryside!)

What shocked me the most last night though was the swarm of young girls absolutely hammered averaging from 13 to 16  dressed in less clothes than Miley herself. With the majority of the world slamming Miley for her choice in clothes or lack of clothes she wears, I was gobsmacked when I arrived at the O2 to see so many girls with SO much flesh on show. Also, why pay €80+ to attend a concert if you are going to get that drunk, not remember it and potentially ruin the night for others. I’m not saying having a few drinks at a concert is wrong, I’ve done it. It was the fact that these girls were so out of it and were an embarrassment to themselves. In my opinion, I go to a concert to see the artist live, embrace the music and enjoy it. The amount of girls that bumped into me while I was trying to enjoy the concert is ridiculous, one almost hurt my mother when she fell onto her because she was so drunk she couldn’t hold herself up.  I felt so angry when I saw a vast majority of people running to the bar every 5 minutes while Miley was on stage. To me, that was the height of ignorance to Miley. You might as well went to a pub or club if all you cared about was the drink! Now I know people will think I am being two faced here but there is a difference in having fun and being plain stupid. There is a time and place to be drunk, and personally, a concert is not one of them.

Aside from that negative point, Miley certainly put on an entertaining show, maybe not suitable for all ages but hey, even Beyonce is provocative at times! I read somewhere today that ‘Hannah Montana is truly dead’, and that person is right, people need to move on from that phase. Miley Cyrus,as we know her now. is here to stay for a long time yet.

5 Seconds of Summer.

Before you all get carried away thinking I’m talking about Irish summers, I’m not. I am talking about my favourite band, 5 Seconds of Summer. Now I guess you are now asking ‘Who the hell are they?’

5 Seconds of Summer are an Australian (and 1/4 New Zealand because of Calum) band who have taken the music world by storm. The young band is made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Ashton Irwin and Calum Hood. It all started back in December 2011, when the boys started uploading home videos to Youtube and pleading to their small group of fans to ‘make them famous‘! They released their first Ep Unplugged in June 2012 and it went in at number 3 in the Australian iTunes chart but failed to chart in the official music chart. 5SOS soon became known worldwide as one of their fans just happened to be One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and he shared their single Gotta Get Out on twitter and the Youtube views on escalated quickly for the 5SOS boys . They released a second EP in December 2012 called Somewhere New and their success began to grow even bigger. Louis Tomlinson then managed to get the 5SOS boys to be 1D’s opening act on their Take Me Home tour in 2013.

Here is an acoustic version of their single Gotta Get Out, the song Louis shared on twitter.

The song that made them receive fans worldwide was Heartbreak Girl which features on their EP Somewhere New. To date, the video has over 9 million views on Youtube.

Now, before you start thinking ‘oh 5 Seconds of Summer must be a boyband if they toured with 1D!’ Nope, you’re wrong! Don’t make the mistake of  classing 5SOS as a boyband, they are a pop rock band. The Aussie boys have worked with All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth, James Bourne from Busted, McFly and Joel and Benji Madden from Good Charlotte.

On February 5th 2014, 5SOS released their latest single She Looks So Perfect worldwide on iTunes for pre-order and immediately, it went in at the number one spot in over 35 countries.

On Friday 28th of March, the boys reached the number 1 spot in Ireland’s official music charts.

On Saturday 29th of March, the boys received their first ever official number one in Australia.

On Sunday 30th of March, 5SOS were announced the official UK Number 1 single.

Today, the 1st of April, 5SOS released She Looks So Perfect in America and it went in at number one on the iTunes charts so I expect it to reach the number one spot in the official American charts soon.

For me, being a huge fan since June 2012, this success is so surreal! I can’t imagine how the boys themselves must feel.

One thing that is obvious, 5 Seconds of Summer are very grateful to their fans for making them so successful, thanking them daily on their twitter accounts. I’ve been lucky enough to meet the guys and they are genuinely nice guys and appreciated the fact I had travelled to see them live.

5 Seconds of Summer in London, November 2013

So I’d keep an eye on 5 Seconds of Summer, they are my ones to watch for 2014.

Below is the video for their single She Looks So Perfect and it is such a catchy song, I know it will be that song you can not get out of your head for days after 😛

Some days stay gold forever..

Today is kind of a sad day for me. Later today, I say goodbye to one of my favourite bands, The Wanted, as they arrive in Dublin on their Farewell Tour.

I know, some of you (okay all of you!) have probably rolled you’re eyes at that last sentence.
But The Wanted played a huge part in my life.
I’ve met some of my best friends and I’ve had some incredible memories because of them!

It all began back in Summer 2010, when I stumbled a crossed a very baby faced looking band on YouTube with their first single All Time Low. It wasn’t until Summer 2011, when I met the boys for thee first time, that I released how much of an impact they’ve made on my life.

20140324-014224.jpg

In March 2012, I met the boys again when I was going through a really hard time and they were the sweetest boys ever! They gave me strength to keep going. (Cheesy I know!)

20140324-014023.jpg

And today, I get to meet them as a band one last time. I might just ask them how do you actually get up from an All Time Low.. (Get it? I’m so hilarious.. Okay I know I’m not but laugh anyway!)

Saying goodbye is never an easy thing to do, but hopefully it’s not forever.

I’m kind of excited too. My friend Sophie met Nathan today and got me a video and it’s made me excited to see my fave again! (I shall post the video on my Instagram later and you can find the link to that on my page somewhere..)

One thing is for sure, I will never forget the memories I have with The Wanted and the amazing friends I’ve made through them (well unless I lose my memory) because ‘Some days stay Gold Forever..’ ❤
